Graphene experts are tackling a critical issue in 2D materials research: the reproducibility gap. This gap hinders the translation of 2D materials into practical applications, as researchers often struggle to replicate results from other labs. The problem stems from the unique properties of 2D materials, which are highly sensitive to environmental factors and require meticulous documentation of experimental conditions. A recent initiative led by Peter Bøggild aims to address this challenge by introducing a standardized template for experimental procedures (STEP). This template encourages researchers to break down processes into detailed, step-by-step instructions, including materials, equipment, and condition variations. By doing so, the STEP method promotes transparency and facilitates troubleshooting. The initiative also includes the Reproducibility Charter (ReChart), a checklist that encourages funding bodies and publishers to prioritize reproducibility goals. While the STEP method and ReChart are designed for 2D materials, their impact could extend to various fields involving nanofabrication and clean room work. The key to success lies in widespread adoption, which requires a collective effort from researchers, companies, funders, and publishers. With the right push, a small shift in focus on reproducibility could lead to significant advancements in materials science and technology.
